CORRUGATED CARDBOARD AND BOX
Corrugated cardboard is obtained by gluing corrugated paper (corrugated) between two cardboards. Gluing is the feature that gives strength to corrugated cardboard, which acts as a column in vertical use and as a belt in horizontal use. In addition to its durability, being easy to cut, fold and print makes corrugated cardboard an ideal packaging material.
The first corrugated material was produced in England by Edward G. Healy and Edward E. Allen to be used in the inner parts of hats and patented in 1856. In 1871, the “corrugated” material did not come out of the hats of English gentlemen until the American Albert L. Jones used the corrugation, which he pasted on paper, to protect glass bottles. The first machine on which today’s corrugated cardboard production system is fitted was manufactured by Samuel Langston in 1908. The first corrugated cardboard boxes were produced in America as postal parcels, today the standard boxes are called “American boxes”.
Corrugated Cardboard was first produced in our country by SEKA in Izmit 83 years after its production in the world. According to OMÜD, 717,794 tons of corrugated cardboard was produced in our country in 2000 and 6666 people work in the sector. The average per capita consumption of corrugated cardboard in Turkey is 11 kg per year. Our country ranks 6th in corrugated cardboard production in Europe after Germany, France, Italy, England and Spain.
